Chevrolet has promised something big for Corvette fans during next week’s New York motor show. Not only is the already announced 2015 Stingray Z06 generating a buzz with its eye catching lines and new power plant but a new variant of the seminal American muscle car will also be revealed to the world.
Happily spoiling their own surprise Chevrolet has revealed a week early that the new Corvette variant is a convertible, the Corvette Stingray Convertible. Happy in the knowledge that seeing the car in real life will still generate wow moments Chevrolet has released specifications and a series of sumptuous preview photos of the new car.
With the same 626bhp supercharged V8, the same transmission and performance technology the Stingray Convertible will offer no–compromise performance, with or without the roof. 2015 is looking to be a very good looking year for Corvette; the Jaguar F-Type now has some serious competition.
New York should see Corvette make a great show of it with both the new 2015 Stingray Z06 and the Stingray Convertible on show. Both eye-catching examples of American design.
Using the latest design and manufacturing techniques Chevrolet were able to base the Stingray Convertible on exactly the same platform as the coupe. This is due mainly to the already rigid aluminium chassis of the Stingray Z06.
According to Corvette’s chief engineer Tadge Juechter the difference between the coupe and convertible should be minimal. The convertible even features the same mechanics as the coupe. The quoted performance time of 0-60mph in 3.5 seconds seems to bare out the claims that the convertible is as fast as the coupe.
The same LT4 supercharged 6.2litre V8 is present and tuned to produce the same 625bhp and 635lbs of torque. This latest generation engine also introduces direct injection, variable valve timing and cylinder shut down. There are two options for transmissions; the 7 speed manual 8L890 with automatic rev matching or the 8 speed auto with flappy paddle gear changers.
The Z06 and the Convertible both feature leading edge performance technology as well as stunning good looks. Can the Corvette take on its European rivals once again?
