Quantum computing has long promised to change the way we use computers, especially when it comes to solving the unsolvable. At the moment there is only one company producing quantum computers and that company is D-Wave Systems who are bringing science-fiction to life.

YouTubes Linus Sebastian of Linus Tech Tips was lucky enough to visit D-Waves head-office facility to see the D-Wave chips in action, a trip that seems more like a journey into the future than a drive down the road.

The Lexus Hoverboard is Here, Slide.

The Lexus Slide is the latest interpretation of the high tech dream, a form of friction-less levitating transport. The latest to make the world wonder, is it really a Hoverboard? Slide is a working high tech wonder with one small caveat, it needs something to push against. It isn’t a ‘Back to the Future’ Hoverboard but instead a maglev skateboard, which in the end may be even cooler.

Inside the Slide Lexus design genius Haruhiko Tanakashi has managed to squeeze multiple high temperature superconductors that will resist the magnet field of a permanent magnet with enough force to lift it and a fully grown man into the air. The superconductors used by Lexus only take on their special properties when cooled to -197 degrees Celsius hence the steam coming out of the side of the Slide which is the exhaust of the liquid nitrogen cooling system keeping the superconductors super chilly.

Quantum Levitation, The Flying Quantum Rug…

Levitation, the ability to appear to defy gravities bonds, has long fascinated humanity. From flying carpets to flying nuns it has long been part of our culture.There is a modern take on this ancient story as well, Superconducting Levitation. Seemingly able to cancel out gravity and allow objects to levitate, it seems to be the answer to giving us mere mortals at least one of superman’s powers, the ability to fly. Unfortunately superconductors don’t cancel out gravity and we will never fly under our own power, undies on the outside maybe. Instead the levitating effect called Quantum Levitation uses a number of the unusual properties of superconductors to create the effect.All current superconductors need the cold to enter their superconducting phase. In this phase electrons are able to move about without any resistance, power loss or heat generated, which is typical for most wires or electronics that use ordinary conductors. Many different materials exhibit superconducting properties, from metals to the latest ceramics most substances have been tested for these properties. Ceramics are the latest so called high temperature superconductors. High temperature in the world of superconductors means -200 degrees Celsius. Cold enough to be cooled by the cheaper liquid nitrogen instead of liquid helium. Once a material is cooled sufficiently and enters its superconducting phase it’s electrical and magnetic properties change.
