Sony has been beavering away, and bleeding money, trying to get its Xperia Z series to the top of the Android smartphone heap. With the release of the Z3 Remote Play smartphones underway Sony (and Carphone Warehouse) have kicked the marketing machine up a gear and they’ve gone underwater.

At this week’s E3 conference Sny added a little detail to their plans for the amazing Playstation TV micro console and media device, also known as the Vita TV in Japan.
Under the hard plastic shell the PS TV contains the brains of a PS Vita handheld. The quad core ARM CPU, powerful GPU and great sound make this one of the most powerful micro consoles on the market.

Let’s just get this one point out of the way early, the key to next generation gaming is Game Streaming. The only real question is when. Whether connected to a cloud service or a local PC the chances are in the not too distant future the machine you are playing a game on won’t be the one rendering the frames.
While game streaming technology has been bubbling away and developing for a number of years it is only now that the technology is ready for prime time. Services are already appearing from Sony and Nvidia but Valve’s is also preparing to launch its own assault on our living rooms, their primary weapon being the Steam Machines that include game streaming functionality.
Amongst all of this progress Microsoft have been decidedly quiet on the subject of game streaming with either the Xbox One, PC’s or tablets. Are they that far behind the 8 ball?

Sony’s handful of gaming excitement the PS Vita is being given an upgrade. Already two years old the original PCH-1000 is being replaced worldwide by the new PS Vita Slim, the PCH-2000.
The new slim model has been on sale in Japan since October where six different colours are available. Sales in the UK begin on February 7 but they will only get black slims for the moment. The release dates for the rest of the world are unknown, but word on the street has it that all remaining stocks of the original PCH-1000 are the last, the worldwide roll-out is underway.
Whether it be gaming on the go or PS4 remote play Sony’s PS Vita Slim is the new generation gadget for the job.

Just as the dust had settled on the next generation consoles Sony has shaken up the gaming world with the most unlikely and simultaneously most exciting gaming product of 2013. PS Vita TV is that new product, Sony’s now not so secret weapon in the next generation console war.
The Vita TV is in essence a stationary PS Vita, bringing with it all of the positives and negatives of the handheld it is crafted from. Vita TV however isn’t required to be the most powerful device in your home, that’s the job of the next generation console or PC. The Vita TV is instead a media streamer, light weight (micro) console and gaming thin client that can extend Sony’s home entertainment universe, yes that means Remote Play.
Has the magic returned to Sony, have they pulled a rabbit out of their hat? Will Vita TV be the ultimate entertainment extender or will it be just a key ring for the PS4, gadget bling?
