After many weeks of NVIDIA preparing the world for their brand new graphics processor, with the wheels of the marketing machine running at full speed NVIDIA’s new GPU the GK104 has been introduced to the world. The basis of the new GFX 680 the war of the Über video card has swung back in NVIDIA’s favour.
NVIDIA’s new design emphasizes power efficiency and performance where-as the previous generation chips went for performance at any cost. Strangely though the previous generation were beaten by AMD while this new more power efficient design ends being up to 3 times faster – per watt of power – than the previous generation chips and soundly beats AMD’s latest, the HD 7970.
In one foul swoop NVIDIA have stolen the crown back, reaching over and taking the crown right off the kings brow. While the GTX 680 video card slaps AMD back into second place NVIDIA isn’t done yet, they may have an ace up their sleeve. The GTX 680 is cheaper, faster and lower power than AMD’s best, the 7970, the King is dead. Long live the new King.

Our understanding of the universe is expanding in all directions, expanding outwards as we see more and more of the cosmos and inwardly as we learn more about the nano world. In the nano world the tools for capturing the action shots are improving but there are still a number of destinations we are unable to explore. Organic organisms – for example, influenza virus – are too delicate for the standard tools of nano exploration. Powerful x-rays and laser illumination used in modern microscopes simply disintegrate such delicacies. In these situations scientists have been turning to simulations – computer models – for answers. Until now, studying viruses has been challenging in laboratories, this new technology not only allows for greater offline research, it belies the complexity associated with simulating billions of particles in the correct conditions to create such simulations
Dr. Ying Ren along with a team of researchers at the Chinese Academy of Sciences Institute of Process Engineering have also been searching for answers using simulators, in the process they have developed the Computational Microscope, a breakthrough in simulation technology.

The tussle between AMD and NVIDIA has erupted once again, both jockeying for position at the top of the Video Card heap. With marketing departments loaded and ready to fire at ten paces the great GPU – Graphics Procesing Unit – race starts a new. Two weeks ago Nvidia announced the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 580M was the fastest mobile graphics processor on the market, AMD not to take such claims lightly has this week announced the AMD Radeon HD 6990M, claiming to be up to 25% faster than the competition. Will NVIDIA have a comeback, we will all have to wait and see.
AMD’s marketing department would like us to highlight its latest catch phrase technologies, things like EYEFinity, a technology built into AMD’s new chips that allows 6 displays to be connected and used as one continuous display. It does look spectacular for gaming, full video surround, immersive. HD3D is AMD’s take on integrating 3D glasses for 3D movies and to give those first person shooters head ducking realism. App Acceleration cuts CPU usage by shifting application work loads to the GPU, using the math’s crunching power to make easy work of applications like video production and photo editing. AMD PowerPlay™ power management technology with dynamic power management with low power idle state should stop this GPU requiring a nuclear power station to operate.
