Here at Highpants HQ we have a great appreciation for high quality audio. Not only does it get us through the day but it also acts as the heat beat of the team.
So, when we stumbled across the Tivoo Max, a new gadget that combines portable high-quality audio, retro styling and pixel art, we couldn’t resist banging it on the company credit card. Just don’t tell the boss! If he finds out we figure we can just say it was for review purposes, content is king after all.

Intel is well known for its ability to craft silicon, this week it has taken to setting world records with drones, 500 to be precise. After taking the record from a bunch of noodle eating students in 2015 Intel technicians decided to step it up this year and so 500 was decided on as the magic number.
The small industrial village of Krailling in Germany saw Intel, Guinness (counting clicker in hand), a few guests and an orchestra gather for a record attempting performance. For this performance Intel managed to gather and launch a fleet of custom drones so large that it was detectable by radar. The FAA had to be notified before launching each performance.

Have you ever been hiking and needed to light up an entire side of a mountain, nup me either, but if you ever do YouTuber and compulsive DIY’er rctestflight has built a torch for such an occasion. Using 10 massive LED chips each drawing 100 Watts of juice this monster torch can throw out 90,000 Lumens of pure white light. A standard home LED bulb uses between 15 -30 LED chips (depending on the bulb) and uses between 10 and 20 Watts of power to produce a measly 800-1000 Lumens of light.
Presented for your viewing pleasure is one of the most extreme home-made torches seen in many years. Now that the hard work designing and assembling the torch is complete the fun can begin, working out what the hell to do with 90,000 Lumens of light power. Sit back relax and don’t forget to turn off the lights when you leave.

Las Vegas is the adult’s only city of lights that will entertain and amaze all visitors. Although this does make trying to capture the attention of new visitors to Las Vegas an ever increasing challenge for the hotels and casinos that call Vegas home.
The SLS Hotel (formerly the Sahara) has many such attention catching sights; the LED display floating above the Centre Bar is one such sight that is sure to amaze. Floating above the bar and visible to all who walk into the hotel is the golden 3D face animation, a display that attracts endless streams of viewers.
Designed and built by Daktronics the golden face is actually part high tech display and part optical illusion, a forced perspective display that is only visible from just the right angle. The installation uses 2.1 million colour LED’s spaced at 6mm intervals to create a seemingly 3D animation. Unlike an LED cube the Daktoniks installation actually places the LED’s around the inside surface of the clear box that contains it.
Presented for your viewing pleasure is one of the many amazing sights that visitors to Las Vegas can enjoy. A stunning execution of technology matched with artistic talent in order to produce an awesome high-tech display. Sit back, relax and prepare to be amazed by LED’s.

Lighting anything other than a Christmas tree these days seems to still involve the same bulb shaped lights, are we trapped by the socket and spheres of the past!? One Idaho based start-up, Rohinni, is trying to change all this with its illuminating paper, LightPaper. The world’s thinnest LED light source LightPaper is as thin as a piece of paper and cooler than a room full of Fonzies. Mold it to any surface and wire it up to flash to the beat LightPaper might just be the next generation of LED lighting.
Rohinni seems to have perfected the art of printing LED lighting solutions. The Rohinni printing process involves mixing ink with tiny LEDs and printing this solution onto a conductive layer, sounds simple but perfecting a process such as this is never an easy feat. This paper thin circuit is then sandwiched between two outer layers, sealing the entire package or sheet of LightPaper. The process can be applied to almost any shape and surface, illuminating the world in entirely new ways.

Illuminating our lives with their high tech brightness LED’s have quickly taken over the world. DIY projects abound for this wonder technology, you can literally now find instructions to jam the low power lights into almost anything but there is one project that continues to fascinate, the LED coffee table. People have been devising cunning ways to integrate LED’s into coffee tables for many years but a new generation of illuminating furniture is bringing a whole new rockin set of features to our living rooms.
Using modern processing power, wireless networking, infrared transmitters and receivers the LED coffee table is now interactive, add mobile phone control and you have a thoroughly modern take on a piece of furniture that even cave men made use of. All of this adds up to coffee tables that can play the part of disco lights, are touch sensitive, play video games, yes even Tetris, and generally look cool while supporting your beverages.
Two of our favourite examples of the latest generation of LED coffee table are by RGB Styles and Julius Fischer. Jump to Julius’ webpage for instructions on how he built his modern masterpiece. Both video’s present examples of Highpants furniture set to a techno beat while generating massive amounts of nerd envy. Sit back relax and let the living room disco come to life. Remember to turn it up loud and don’t dare put that drink down without a coaster.
