Intel Announce Medfield Smartphone Partners, Motorola and Lenovo, But Where Is LG?…

In the build-up to the Mobile World Conference – MWC, 27th of Feb to the 1st of March – and the inevitable release of their Medfield mobile phone CPU Intel has announced its partners. Working with Intel to turn its raw chips – Z2460 Medfield system on-chip – into Smartphones initially will be Motorola and Lenovo. LG, after demonstrating working handsets at CES has gone surprisingly quiet on the subject though.

The manufacturing partners are working closely with Intel to ensure that handsets are available on the official release date. Intel is still to announce a specific date for the release, officially they are still publicly stating that the release will be early in 2012. Here at Highpants we have had a group stab in the dark and we expect the phones to be released at or just after the MWC. Lenovo had been demonstrating their Racer A Intel based mobile phone at CES, which were already fast and stable. Intel wants this release to be all it can be so the only thing we can guarantee is that if the chips aren’t 100% Intel won’t rush them out the door.

A Fist Full of Silicon, Intel’s OEM Engineers To Sample Prison Life…

Engineering Samples, these unreleased CPU’s are intended to allow Intel’s partners to perfect the next generation gadgets, they are a rare and treasured beast that are never intended for public sale. Like a classic Clint Eastwood western the double cross is not something that Intel takes lightly, being caught selling Intel’s next generation technology to it’s competitors for Intel is the ultimate betrayal. So as you can imagine when Intel discovered that it had been double crossed by employees of one of it’s OEM business partners in Taiwan it’s wraith was fast and fierce. Working with Taiwan’s Criminal Investigation Bureau – CIB – the four suspects were quickly tracked down and taken into custody in the city of Taoyuan.

The four suspects by all accounts were seemingly intelligent engineers working for one of Intel’s major OEM – Original Equipment Manufacturers who turn Intel’s chips into the gadgets we all love – Criminal masterminds they were not though. Selling the chips on EBay in full public view doesn’t display the normal criminal flare required for such an operation. Especially when you consider they sold the chips for an average of $400 each, when AMD would have written a blank cheque to get their hands on the samples which included Intel’s latest 22nm chips which are due for public release later this year.

Medfield: Intel’s Smartphone Processor…

Intel’s Medfield processor is a brand new flavor for Intel. Designed from the ground up for the extremely low power requirements of the Smartphone world. Intel hopes Medfield will go places they have never been, in our pockets. Intel has undoubtedly dominated the desktop computer for 30 years but they have consistently failed – had their butts kicked – in the low power world, smart phones and tablets included. The current leader of low power processors is the ARM processor. Designed in England and manufactured by many companies these processors can be found in every smartphone and 99% of tablets. Look out ARM Intel is gunning for your market.

For Midfield Intel has pulled out all the stops and is finally working in the right direction when it comes to low power. Starting with a notebook processor and altering it for ultra low power could be considered working top down, this time Intel has worked bottom up. Starting with the design of each type of transistor, optimizing each to stop current leakage, wasted power that is converted to heat. Working their way up the design ladder the chip itself integrates a new design strategy, System On A Chip. SoC is a process of integrating as much of a system onto one chip. Intel didn’t stop there, with their sights set on the Smartphone world they have built in technology to accelerate common android functions.

A New Class of Laptop, ASUS UX31 Ultrabook…

Launched at Computex 2011 the UX31 is part of a new UX Series of laptops from ASUS, also released along side the UX31 was it’s smaller brother the UX21 -11.6 inch screen-. Intels new generation chipset and CPU have allowed power usage and temperatures to drop, essential for this new generation of laptop.

The UX31 and Ultrabook reference design certainly do pack a lot of technology into a sleek and compact design, Intel has tried to make an industry standard model better than the MacBook Air and have generally managed to do just that. The UX31 presented at Computex included a Core i7-2637M –Sandy Bridge CPU– running at 1.7GHz, half the speed of the desktop equivalent. According to ASUS online options will include the cheaper Core i5 as well as the Core i7 CPU as seen in the demonstration models. 4GB of DDR3 Ram is standard along with the SanDisk U100 SATA III SSD, starting at 64GB, options for sizes up to 256GB will also be available. The UX31’s impressive 13.3 inch LED backlight screen boasts 1600×900 resolution, solving the most annoying characteristics of Netbooks, slow speed and low resolution screens. Intel’s anaemic integrated graphics is built into the CPU -keeping power usage down-, which it does very well but at the cost of graphics performance which is still a tad slow, in the same ballpark as most Netbooks. Still there is enough power here to run a second monitor or TV, watch movies and generally plod around as we do.

Intel’s 3D Transistor…

It seems to be that everything is going 3D at the moment, Nintendo’s 3DS portable 3D and TV manufacturers trying to convince us all to wear goofy glasses aren’t the only 3D revolutions happening, Intel has jumped on the 3D bandwagon with their announcement of 3D transistors on Wednesday – 4th May 2011, San Francisco press conference -. The transistor is considered by many to be the greatest invention of the 20th century, frankly it should be up there with the discovery of fire. It is the building block of every gadget and make life easier device made today with the 3D transistor being an important step in its evolution

Intel’s announcement introduced the world to Ivy Bridge, the internal product name for their next generation processors, the commercial product will be designated with a model number, eg 2600K once it goes on sale. The presentation given covered many of the breakthroughs and benefits of the new 3D technology. 37% performance increase over previous generations, half power requirements at same performance levels. Ivy Bridge will be released in the last quarter of 2011, initially the processors will be used in servers but the technology will be spread across Intel’s entire product line as the manufacturing process matures, production numbers increase and price drops.
