RC Star Wars…

Combining his love of Star Wars and a passion for quadcopters YouTuber Oliver C has managed to bring to life not one but two Star Wars RC aircraft.  The RC Millennium Falcon and the Tie Interceptor both capture the spirit of the original films brilliantly and then proceed to fly off around the park and have fun, it doesn’t get much better than that.

Presented for your viewing pleasure are two spectacular home-made flying machines from a galaxy far far away. Now the real challenge is who can build the first working Deathstar? Sit back relax and prepare to be amused by Star Wars hijinks in the park.

Time Twister, A Digital Clock With Lego a Twist…

In the world of Lego Robotics craftsman Hans Andersson is indeed a creative spark. During the day Hans designs business software but when time allows at night he becomes a robotics genius.

Hans has taken a simple toy and created something that’s off the charts cool, the Mindstorm Rubik’s Cube Clock called Time Twister. Lego clock designs have become popular with Mindstorm – Robotic Lego – enthusiasts but most have been a fairly standard affair, analogue faced tick tock kind of clock. Until now that is, Swedish Mindstorm master Hans Andersson has created the most dramatic and visually stunning clock mechanism ever. Closely resembling 4 black and white automated Rubik’s cubes this is a clock that can make the passage of time itself interesting. This isn’t the first incredible robot to come from Hans’ tinkering either he has also produced robot’s that can solve Rubik’s cubes and also another that will complete a Sudoku puzzle.

littleBits, the RadioShack electronics kit of the future has arrived. Consisting of dozens of unique self contained modules or bits that snap together magnetically, joining together to do useful little tasks.

Using littleBits anyone can now build their own electronic gadgets, no soldering or electronics expertise required, thanks to the clever littleBits. Currently the most popular projects consist of turning cardboard cut-out animals and robots into living animated and reacting characters.

Fumiyuki Sato’s Flying Sphere…

Unusual Flying Objects have been a constant in laboratories around the world, ever since the Wright brothers flew that first model we have been trying to figure out new ways to fly.

The helicopter was one such idea that actually worked as is the tilt rotary air craft – Osprey -. For these two idea’s that struggled and eventually made it to market there are thousands of idea’s that don’t make it. Too complex, to whacky.

The Circular Flying Object or Flying Sphere is a new design that has recently made it out of the labs and into the world of demonstrations. Wowing crowds around Japan Fumiyuki Sato and his Unusual Flying Object may be the next evolution of flight.

Electree, Solar Bonsai aka The Electric Ninja for Power Cables…

Electricity is the lifeblood of our gadget laden world. With each new generation of gadget comes more demanding power requirements. With every new gadget we bring into our homes comes the need to charge it, keep it fed. Mobile phones are just the tip of the ice-berg, tablets, MP3 players, cameras, remote controls, keyboards and game controllers all now need a place to charge. While Wi-Fi has loosened the shackles of the network cable, batteries still need to be plugged into power some-how, usually requiring a power point. Centralizing all of your charging needs into one spot, housing it in a stylish and Über cool design the Electree frees our gadgets from the power board nightmare evolving at every power point in every household. Powered by amorphous silicon solar panels that store their charge in the Electree’s on-board battery the Electree is always ready to bring those gadgets back to life. This is one of those rare gadgets that actually frees up power sockets in the grand power board of life.

Designer Vivian Muller has taken inspiration from nature, specifically drawing inspiration from the bonsai tree’s of Japan which are compact but still very efficient light collectors. Here at Highpants we think it could also be described as a power shrub, it may be the shrubbery that Monty Python were searching for all of this time. The Sony Dash Übergadget! Information Device, Picture Frame, Alarm Clock, Dot Dot Dot Dash…

Computers are shrinking themselves into new places around our homes and offices. Driving this revolution is a new class of application friendly device, The Information Device. Sony’s new HID-B70H Dash is one such device, this is a 7″ Touch-screen Über Information Device. Flexibility is the Dash’s middle name, this flexibility gives it many personalities; Über Alarm Clock, electronic side kick in the kitchen, picture frame, media terminal or real-time data display. You make the choice by selecting and installing applications from a library of over a thousand free applications, turning the Dash into your own personal information – dash – hound.

Once it’s off and running there’s no restarts, no refreshing, no crash’s, no hassle operation. Sony has kept the design of the two new Dash models understated – the HID-B7 $129.95 USD and HID-B70H $169.95 USD -, they are handsome but not over the top, able to fit into any situation. Both models will be available in October and can be pre-order now. Both are almost identical, with the only difference being the built in lithium-Ion battery in the more expensive B70H. Even though the new battery does give portable pretenses the Dash and other similar devices work best in stationary roles, stationary tablets if you will. If data on the go is your thing a standard tablet can’t be beaten. Being a stationary tablet isn’t a bad thing though, as a bed side computer the Dash allows you to set it up exactly as you need for that situation and just leave it. Do you really want to have to plug your tablet into your bedroom speakers, power etc., every time you go to bed.

Boogie RIP e-Writer: Etch A Sketch For Grownups…

Paper, the pulp of fiction, the holder of histories has a new challenger. 2000 years after it’s invention, paper has possibly it’s greatest challenger yet. The world of electronic gadgetry has finally caught up with one of mans greatest ever inventions. Improv Electronics burst on the scene with their Boogie Board LCD eWriters earlier this year. Cheap, hardy and an incredibly useable writing tablet the Boogie Boards quickly became known for , now the Boogie just got better. Improv this week announced the Boogie Board RIP – Record Image Preserve – LCD Writing Tablet, this new more advanced Boogie at the press of a button will record the contents of the display to a pdf, storing it in the Boogies on board memory. While the Boogie may look similar to other tablets and e-book readers it is actually designed from a different perspective, the writer instead of the reader. At its most basic the Boogie is an electronic notepad for sketches, quick lists and short notes. With sizes ranging from 7.5 to 10.5 and prices low enough to worry 3M the Boogies boards are a gadget on the move.

The Moving Image Picture, Sony HD S-Frame Innovation Series…

Sony has this week release a new picture frame with a difference, the HD S-Frame Series. As well as the usual assortment of PictureFrame functions, slide show, clock, alarm, the new series picture frame can play full 1080 HD media files on its LCD screen. Three new models have been introduced as part of the HD S-Frame line-up, top of the range is the DPF-HD1000 with a 10″ LCD – 1024×600 – , DPF-HD800 8″ – 800×480 – and not to be forgotten the cut down bargain of the group the DPF-HD700 7″ LCD.

With the new S-Frame models Sony has achieved a very clean and sharp look, the front fascia is free from sparkles and fancy button layouts that have been used in the past on Sony picture frames. Attractive but they still look at home by the bed or on the mantle piece.

Texas Instruments RGB LED Coffee Table, Coffee Table in Disco…

Texas Instruments has managed to invent the funkiest piece of furniture almost completely by accident. The team from TI have created the ultimate Disco coffee-table. Designed as a demonstration project for TI’s MSP-430 microcontroller the project was just a side note until they switched it on.

The project was given the title ‘The RGB LED Coffee Table’ and the plans are available for anyone to make their own. Watching the video you are quickly hypnotised by the wild colour changes and rhythmic beat matching that causes colours to wash over the table in waves. The LED lights used are capable of displaying any of 16 million colours in its palette, and it shows, graduated fade outs being one of the beautiful results.
