Fire in a Bottle, Nitromethane Filmed in Slow Motion.

Fire is one of nature’s most spectacular chemical reactions, a reaction that demonstrates one of the ways that matter can be converted to energy. Containing this reaction within a glass bottle and filming it in slow motion allows this fascinating process to become plainly visible, and it just looks stunning. Humanity has maintained a fascination with fire since we learned to control its properties as cavemen, turning it into a tool that has changed who we are, and created an obsession for many.

The purveyors of slow motion over at Warped Perception share this fascination for fire in their latest video ‘Nitromethane Jet Bottle’, perfectly capturing this hypnotic reaction. As always WP aren’t happy to simply fire off everyday alcohol in a little bottle, no they crank things up to 11 with a massive glass jug and a healthy dose of nitromethane, and it is spectacular. Site back relax and prepare to enjoy a pyromaniac with a slow motion camera capturing the almost alive chemical reaction that is fire.

The Sonic Fire Extinguisher, Fighting Fire with Bass…

It seems ever since cavemen discovered fire we have been fighting to keep it under control. Sound waves may not currently be the go to tool for fire fightering but two students from George Mason University are cranking up the bass to tune out the flames, and it works.  The ingenious portable sonic fire extinguisher uses low frequency sound waves (30-60hz) to briefly disrupt the chemical reaction that is fire, putting a halt to the flames within close proximity.

Engineering seniors Viet Tran and Seth Robertson now hold the preliminary patent and are working on potential applications. With many positive characteristics; no material gets added to the fire and there is no water damage, sonic firefighting may just be the way of the future.

Presented for your viewing pleasure is the sonic fire extinguisher in action, in the hands of the fire busters. Sit back relax and please don’t try this at home, your speakers may not be this fireproof.

Fire and Ice, Fishing with Fireworks…

Under normal circumstances it is only natural to expect water to win over fire, with its ability to smother and extinguish the explosive reaction. One crazy clever Swedish fisherman has however found an explosive exception, firing lit fireworks under ice. A spectacular and explosive exception.

Presented for your viewing pleasure is the excellent new pastime of trying to fish (deafen fish at the very least) on an ice covered lake using fireworks. An exceptional demonstration of fire winning over ice and water. Sit back, relax and remember to always point the fireworks away from yourself.

Laser plus Camp Fire equals Awesome…

Staring endlessly into the hypnotic glow of a camp fire is one of the greatest joys when relaxing at the end of day in the great outdoors. While this pastime has stayed the same since the discovery of fire it has finally been improved thanks to lasers. As we know lasers make everything better and the combination of a camp fire and a laser just proves this point.

Presented for your viewing pleasure is the new spectacular outdoor display, an incredible combination of two awesome outdoor pastimes, playing with lasers and sitting around the camp fire. The combination of fire and smoke passing through the laser beams is nothing short of spectacular. Sit back, relax and prepare to be amazed by the power of lasers, and remember the next time you’re heading out for a camping trip remember to take a laser for the sheer fun of it.

Flex-2 Micro-Gravity Fire, NASA Experiments with Combustion in Space…

NASA continues to play with fire in space as a part of their Flex (Flame Extinguishment) experiments. The latest Flex-2 combustion experiment has produced some incredible findings, and amazing videos.

Installed on the International Space Station (ISS) in 2009 the experiments hope to improve our knowledge of how different liquids burn in zero gravity environments. Eventually leading to more efficient and cleaner burning rocket engines.

Presented for your viewing pleasure is the video evidence that NASA loves to play with fire, a video capturing the amazing effects of setting things alight in space. Sit back, relax and please don’t try this at home where gravity is plentiful.

Pelty the Candle Powered Bluetooth Speaker…

Powered by fire Pelty transforms the thermal energy of a candle into electrical energy to drive a speaker that converts the electrical power into physical sound waves. It may sound like a complex process but it couldn’t be simpler, its Pelty the fire powered speaker.

Inside Pelty a thermoelectric material converts the heat into an electrical current, just enough to drive the speaker and its circuits. The ceramic and glass construction makes the entire body of Pelty impervious to heat while still being stylish and able to provide music for any situation.

Presented for your viewing pleasure is the Pelty in action, around the office or on a balcony Pelty is helping set the mood everywhere. Sit back, relax and let the fire turn into music before your ears.
