Science fiction is transforming into reality at an unprecedented pace. Fans of science-fiction and Call of Duty will recognise the TALOS Revision suit that endows soldiers with superhuman abilities. Thanks to DARPA this super suit will soon be a reality.
Giving the world a preview of what is to come Revision Military have this week released a video highlighting the possibilities of TALOS with their suit called Revision. The Canadian based company is already hard at work developing many of the technologies that may eventually appear in a TALOS prototype, a prototype that DARPA is hoping will become a reality with the Mark 5 suit in 2018.

Our humanoid robotic brethren continue to evolve at an astounding rate, while many never seem to be able to find their way out of the lab a small number have evolved to the advanced level of being able to perform in music videos.
Presented for your viewing pleasure tonight is the Battle of the Humanoid Robots Music Video, featuring two of the most advanced robotic creations battle it out on the dance floor. DARPA’s Atlas superhuman robot will match its moves against the little Astroboy wonder that is Nao.
The pinnacle of technological design presented in music video form, a music video montage of the robotic kind. Which cybernetic dance machine makes the best music video?

The ancient art form of discreet surveillance has evolved alongside the technology we use for such purposes. DARPA has this week given us a glimpse of what is now possible, demonstrating ARGUS IS, the latest revolution in surveillance technology.
ARGUS is unlike any other high altitude camera that came before it. Designed and constructed by DARPA funded engineer Yiannis Antoniades ARGUS also represents a new surveillance strategy, Wide Area Persistent Stare. WAPS signifies the new ability to capture a live high resolution video stream of a huge swath of landscape, over long periods of time. Not only is ARGUS capable of 1.8 gigapixel images but it captures them at 15 frames per second.
The first example of ARGUS’s work was also released to the public recently. The incredibly detailed image captures 10 square miles of Virginia, with Quantico City front and centre in the image. Visit the DARPA site see the original ultra high resolution image (8400×6300).

After initially announcing the Phoenix program in October 2011 the R&D behemoth that is DARPA has more news relating to their Wombles in Space Program. Read the previous Highpants article “The Borg Satellites of DARPA’s Phoenix Program” for further background.
DARPA’s Phoenix program for the uninitiated involves construction of special class of utilitarian satellite that would service, repair and recycle already orbiting satellites. With so much of our modern world reliant on satellites DARPA’s Phoenix program could have huge implications for many industries.
The Phoenix satellites have lofty goals ahead of them. Being able to build new satellites from parts donated by decommissioned space junk is just the beginning. They will need to display a Wombles level of crafty in order to recycle, as well as repair satellites with spare parts from old satellites. Phoenix is an ambitious and audacious plan, all to be executed like a ballet at 20,000 miles high.

The X-37B, a Space Plane with many masters, a true multi-purpose platform jointly developed by NASA, Boeing, DARPA, the US Air Force and more widely the US Defense Department. Starting life as the Space Shuttle utility belt the X-37B has evolved to be one of the most flexible and economical space platforms in use today.
Dressed in its black and white tux – heat shield – this James Bond wanna-be has once again disappeared from view, in easy to spot low Earth orbit – 300km -. Off on another top secret mission, what tales will he tell his masters upon his return? Orbital tracking records indicate the X-37B has been off station since the 12th of January, 2012. This is the third such disappearance of an X-37B since orbital testing began in 2010.
The tale of the X-37 Program is filled with mystery and intrigue, pleasant surprises from unexpected potential. Starting life as a blue collar maintenance droid, refueling and repairing satellites, the X-37B has by far exceeded those original aspirations. Partly out of necessity, with the conclusion of the Space Shuttle Program leaving a large gap in NASA’s launch capabilities, and partly due to the X-37Bs brilliant design it has risen to every challenge. It is now a true multi-mission autonomous space plane. A little mini space shuttle that just gets the job done. What is the X-37B? A high flying spy in the sky, next generation research tool, weapons platform or all of the above!?
