Sony PlayStation 4 ‘Project Orbis’ takes shape with AMD Trinity under the Hood…

Sony this month gathered its US game developers for a disclosure meeting. Project Orbis is indeed taking shape with Sony showing off and delivering a new generation of dev kit during the closed door meetings.

Sony’s offices were bulging with game developers as the presentations began. While the dev kit looks like any other tower PC it’s what’s on the inside that matters. This particular tall nondescript black tower includes Sony’s latest software and AMD hardware running the show, Project Orbis looks to be well on schedule for a 2013 release.

One more generation of developer kit is due before the PS4 is released, a release that should be simultaneous with the final silicon for the console, a major milestone.

Intel’s Ivy Bridge Announcement, 3D Transistors For All…

The CPU battle is once again heating up. Intel’s response to AMD’s earlier announcement of Trinity’s availability is to launch the first of its Ivy Bridge CPU’s. Hot off the production line are a bewildering array of 14 new models.

This new third generation of Core-i Series processors, both the i7 (top end) and i5 (mid-range), receive an updated CPU, the i7’s also include a completely reworked integrated graphics processor. All processors make use of the 3D Transistor technology and all are built on the industry leading 22nm manufacturing process. Putting Intel at least one generation ahead the industry, when it comes to manufacturing processes.

The launch may be a little light on details such as price and actual availability dates, technically called a paper launch, it has however achieved their goal of stealing back the limelight. Intel won’t let AMD have any more than 15 minutes of fame at a time.

This is the first of AMD’s next generation silicon that it hopes will take the battle to Intel. Aiming squarely for the googlies AMD hopes to take over the Ultrabook market before Intel even has it’s hardware released. This will of course require AMD to execute their plan without unexpected hold-ups or cancellations.
