NOT SAFE FOR WORK: Those exuberant sextremist protesters FEMEN have once again returned to unleash their unique brand of topless protest on the world. Russian news channel RT have spent time getting to know the FEMEN girls and gained a very interesting perspective of FEMEN in action, with and without their cloths on.

After a fairly quiet 2014 the exuberant topless protesters finished 2014 off with a bang, this time with a Christmas inspired topless protest, religion still being one of their favoured targets, second only to Putin protesting. Fighting against the powers that be made them famous but fighting against religion made them a target, it’s always dangerous to mess with people’s religion, we tend to take our gods quite seriously.

The quietish 2014 may have been a case of burnout for FEMENista, 2013 saw the girls protest all over Europe and capture news headlines throughout the world. But after causing much controversy FEMEN’s  Kiev headquarters were shut down under the threat of jail time. The core FEMENista escaped to France, a far more bare breast friendly nation, and now the girls have regrouped.

The core FEMEN members may only number 4 but their passion for protest is immeasurable, a passion that both attracts many women to their cause while at the same time has many women’s liberation groups up in arms. With catch phrases like ‘Breasts are our Weapons’ and ‘We stripped, We Conquered’ it’s easy to see why.

No matter where you stand you have to give the FEMENista they know how to attract attention.  They have attracted so much attention that many women have formed Anti-FEMEN groups. The French Antigone Movement for example considers FEMEN to be completely void of any intelligible ideology, others say they are little more than spoilt brats. Some even accuse them of being in it purely for the money, topless protesters for hire if you will. They may well be all of the above but you have to love their enthusiasm.

One of the biggest problem with simply choosing a protest subject based upon what is irritating you on the day is it sends out mixed messages. Sure they have fairly consistent targets; religion, totalitarianism, gender inequality but that’s not ideology that’s just rebellion for rebellions sake. There is no thought of what change they are trying to achieve, no direction or consistent theme. They may be a reactionary force but that’s not really how you instigate change, but is change really what they are after? Attention seems more their objective.

The fact both men and women equally confused by FEMEN is probably more a result of the their protest style rather than mixed messages. Stop treating me like an object and stop looking at my breasts is a hard message to get across as you stand there topless waving placards above your head. I suspect no-one has ever read the placards, admit it your thinking what placards?

Are Femen simply the ultimate modern take on a rebel without a cause or are they women fighting for the right to bare their breasts for whatever cause they choose on the day?

The fact that they probably can’t even answer that question and the fact that we may not agree with anything they are fighting for is mostly irrelevant. The right to protest and to influence the world we live in is a right we should all have and exercise from time to time.
