Music, some say an essential part of our souls expression, for others simply an auditory sensation to tap your toes to. No matter which holds true for you listening to our favorite music is an almost universal passion. Providing the driving force for this passion is the greatest technological stalwart in history, the speaker, the trusty direct drive voice coil. It’s a tried, true and simple technology designed to move air, but it is by no means deadly enough.
The other unusual thing about humanities fascination with tunes is the desire to play them on every item we can use to generate noise. Like a Rolf Harris mad scientist it seems there are many other ways to generate noise, dangerously deadly and unusual ways.

Google, a founding member of the internet revolution and juggernaut has long suffered the unfortunate reputation as a faceless machine, possibly the result of its incessant talk of algorithms and automatic page rankings.
The Register has this week revealed the human face behind Google’s page ranking, the life of the Google Raters. A little known part of the page ranking system the Raters are one of the many inputs into a complex system.
The Raters are also Google’s outsiders, an outsourced workforce that is kept at arm’s length, impartial to Google’s influences. Possibly one of the only real work from home internet jobs, hard work replacing scam in this case.

News this week is reverberating around the internet, while orbiting Mercury the Messenger space probe has captured images of something highly unusual, what appears to be a pitch black void, a doorway to the underworld of Mercury.
Eagle eyed NASA enthusiast Scott C Warring (of UFO Sightings Daily) discovered the anomaly within the publicly available data; this particular image is part of the MDIS global mosaic basemap data. The doorway is located adjacent to the Victoria Rupes Cliffs and includes un-naturally straight edges and near perfect corners. Using the adjacent craters for scale the doorway is 5.6km / 3.4 mile wide, if this is the garage door how big is the car?
Taking a closer look at the Mercury void image there appears to be an unusual distortion around the edges, there is no shadow to suggest shape or dimension. Closer inspection shows the completely black shape is a lack of anything more than it is an object.

Foxconn, manufacturer of many of the world’s favourite gadgets has started its own robotic revolution. The first small step has now been taken with Foxconn recently activating the first batch of 10,000 Foxconn robots or Foxbots.
The trials and tribulations of Foxconn over the last two years could fill volumes. Making the situation worse for Foxconn everything they try seems to make the situation worse. Installing suicide nets, exorcisms and pay rises have all failed to ease Foxconn’s HR PR nightmare.
Have no fear though Foxconn’s president Terry Gou is a man with a plan, the first 10,000 Foxbots have now been activated and another 20,000 are due to be installed before the end of 2012, the Foxbot revolution is now underway.

Memory, the behind the scenes star of a high-tech world is about to experience a revolution. The first volley was fired this week when Everspin Technologies announced the availability of their first DDR3 ST-MRAM chip, the EMD3D064M magnetic memory chip.
The new DDR3 ST-MRAM chips combine the speed of DDR3 RAM with the non-volatile nature of NAND flash ST-MRAM. These two qualities provide the potential to unify the memory sub-systems used by today’s gadgets. Blurring the lines between installed and running applications, both becoming the same.
Magnetic memory this fast also opens the interest possibility of a truly always on computer, instant on and off with the hard drive and RAM unified. Many things have to change before that day but it is an interesting possibility none the less.

3D Printers, a technology on the rise, which has now been adopted by NASA. The famous rocketmen have joined the 3D craze, embracing the time and cost benefits of the new manufacturing technology.
NASA has a long tradition of adapting leading edge technology, often out of necessity, and then taking that technology to the extreme. NASA’s use of 3D printing is no different, not happy to simply print funny robot toys the parts produced by NASA’s laser 3D printers will be used in the next generation of rocket and rovers destined for the stars, Mars mainly though.
There are so many potential uses for 3D printing in the aerospace industry that we can expect this to be just the beginning. Once the printers make the journey into space even more possibilities open up; replacement parts, new robots for unexpected situations or building entire rovers at the destination.
