Telstra and Samsung have joined forces to introduce the first 4G tablet to Australia, the Samsung Galaxy 8.9 with 4G. Finally a useable alternative to broadband with Samsung’s tethered 4G goodness bringing high speed internet to the road warriors amongst us.
Along with the Tab 8.9 Telstra also offers two other 4G devices, the HTC Velocity smart phone and the USB 4G Dongle for data access on the go, but the Tab 8.9 is by far the most exciting 4G device to hit Australian shores so far.
The Galaxy Tab 8.9 sits right in the middle of the performance curve as far as tablets are concerned, faster than cheaper tablets on the market but just a little behind the premium price tablets such as the ASUS Transformer Prime. A well rounded tablet, the 1.5Ghz dual core ARM processor provides plenty of speed while sipping power. With add on keyboards, docking stations along with 3rd party Galaxy gadgets the functionality is only limited by your budget.

With the Mobile World Congress in full swing one phone has everyone talking, a Symbian phone of all things. Nokia has managed to capture everyone’s attention with the release of the PureView 808 camera phone. The phone itself isn’t the headline maker but instead the camera that this phone houses. Nokia’s new PureView 808 is the first phone to contain Nokia’s PureView camera, a 41 megapixel shooting revelation.
Mobile phone photography has come along way in recent years, with many creative photographers switching entirely to their mobile phone as their photography tool of choice. The iPhone community is a perfect example, with amazing results evident all over the web. In no small way this must remind us that the brain behind the lens is the most important factor of all.
Nokia’s vision, their big picture seems to embrace this trend, They have long been a leader in camera phone technology and the 808’s ultra-high resolution technology continues this trend. While some Technorati have taken it upon themselves to deride the phone itself there is a lot more at stake here than a single models success. This may be one of the final nails in the coffin of the compact cameras.

The next generation console wars are beginning to heat up. With Microsoft already having selected AMD to supply the graphics processor for their next generation console, now it is Sony’s turn to lock in a graphics processor supplier.

Mars is often thought of as a cold dead rock floating in the silence of space. That is until now, scientific evidence collected by the latest satellites suggest that Mars has recently experienced geological activity.
It has long been known that Mars had been very active geologically in the past, with the solar system’s largest known volcano there was once major activity. That was the long lost past though, after an unknown calamity Mars was thought to have become a dormant planet.
Researcher Gerald Roberts from the University of London led the study which analyzed high resolution images of rocks surrounding the Cerberus Fossae fault line, looking for evidence of geological activity. The biggest surprise occurred when they actually found it. Mars it seems still has an active core with molten magma often bubbling to the surface, driving Mars quakes and volcanoes.
Raising not only the possibility of basic forms of life around these hot magma vents but also the extremely tantalizing idea of rejuvenating Mars. Bringing complex life back to the Martian surface or Terra-forming.

While many may make light of this most unusual phenomenon, alien abduction, there is actually enough anecdotal evidence to suggest this is a real phenomenon and not just mass hysteria as the mainstream sciences would have us all believe. The latest celebrities to publicly discuss their own personal alien encounters have gone on the record with their stories. The Nanny’s Fran Drescher and rocker Sammy Hagar have both publicly discussed the subject during recent interviews.
While Fran has made no secret of her beliefs Sammy Hagar has kept his secret close to his chest not wanting to endanger his career, and rock and roll lifestyle. This is a common story that reflects more upon societies unwillingness to study this phenomenon.
Fran’s tale of abduction begins with a very common tale, driving with her father when they both noticed strange lights in the sky. A large proportion of alien abductions seem to have a a family history to them. With children of abductees often experiencing the same phenomenon, often without family members being aware of this most unusual family heritage.

While the big name brands of Über gaming laptops Alienware, Envy, ASUS and Razer, were busy with post-Christmas and CES celebrations Origin PC snuck up and stole the crown. The crown for the Über gaming laptop now sits squarely on the Origin PC’s EON17-X. Here at Highpants we love creative accountancy as much as the next Darth Vader, but the kids with calculators at centives.net are setting a whole new standard. Calculating the cost to construct a Death Star those creative Centivites have given hope to every evil overlord around world.
While we may each someday wish to push around whole planets with our own personal Death Star the Centivites calculation is just for the basic raw material, steel. The cost to fit out the Death Star with your own personal spa or walk in everything will be extra on top.
If we have learned anything from the past when designing your Death Star, don’t leave open exhaust vents to the core. Especially don’t let the rebel forces get hold of the designs to exploit the one weakness your budget just couldn’t cover.

Pyramids are not only a symbol of power around the world but also one of the greatest mysteries in plain sight. They are found on all four corner of our blue world. If the mainstream historians are to be believed they were apparently built by many diverse groups using the same building plans, plans that all of those diverse groups around the world seem to have forgotten about.
In these time of high strangeness the pyramids seem to be springing back to life. Numerous photos have appeared on the internet over the last 4 years that seem to demonstrate the pyramids shinning a bright beam of light out of the cap stone.
The phenomenon seems to have started with the publication of the Kukulkan beam photo in 2009. While many of the latest photos appear to be doctored copycat photos a recent interview with Hector Siliezar, the original photographer, sees him standing by his story. Adding credence to the tale is the fact that the original photo has stood up well to analysis and does appear to be real.

In the build-up to the Mobile World Conference – MWC, 27th of Feb to the 1st of March – and the inevitable release of their Medfield mobile phone CPU Intel has announced its partners. Working with Intel to turn its raw chips – Z2460 Medfield system on-chip – into Smartphones initially will be Motorola and Lenovo. LG, after demonstrating working handsets at CES has gone surprisingly quiet on the subject though.
The manufacturing partners are working closely with Intel to ensure that handsets are available on the official release date. Intel is still to announce a specific date for the release, officially they are still publicly stating that the release will be early in 2012. Here at Highpants we have had a group stab in the dark and we expect the phones to be released at or just after the MWC. Lenovo had been demonstrating their Racer A Intel based mobile phone at CES, which were already fast and stable. Intel wants this release to be all it can be so the only thing we can guarantee is that if the chips aren’t 100% Intel won’t rush them out the door.

Our favorite four fingered family, The Simpsons, have reached another milestone. On Sunday the 19th The Simpsons aired their 500th episode, “Long Last Leave”, Episode 14 of Series 23 to be precise. Since first airing December 17, 1989 the Simpsons have gone on to become an an institution of hilarity. Springfield’s all over America have never been the same.
Executive Producer James L. Brooks said “I think it’s the flexibility of these characters. They can do any kind of comedy anyone ever thought of, from farce to reality. For a long time, we didn’t want to deal with the fact we could do anything we wanted. There were no sets, no past, no future. The first group of years was spent not taking advantage of any of that. Then we started letting it in.”
Opening with the ultimate montage of the funniest moments, the intro to the show lets you know, this is the 500th Episode. Also reminding us just how long the Simpsons have been a part of our lives. This was after-all one of the first cartoons to appeal to all age groups and demographics.
